DESCRIPTION:  The Blue Jellyfish is an umbrella to saucer-shaped species reaching up to 30cm in diameter. The structure is of a uniform thick jelly with clusters of stinging cells found on the upper surface of the bell. The margin of the bell has eight groups of 40 to 60 tentacles. Colour varies from translucent through pale yellow, pale brown, pale grey to light blue or purple. In faintly coloured species the blue tends to outline the pattern of the internal sculpting of the bell. The blue jellyfish can drift along, easily capturing prey with its dense array of stinging tentacles. DISTRIBUTION: Cyanea lamarckii occurs in coastal waters all around the British Isles. HABITAT:  A pelagic species best seen at low tide at the waters edge. TIME TO SEE:  All year round.
